Using the Closest to the Sun food guide in everyday meals

UroLongevity Press · September 16, 2026 · Reader education

Closest to the Sun is the book’s shorthand for thinking about foods and how they are prepared. Use it as a starting point for planning a meal, not as a moral ranking of what you eat. The companion worksheet helps you connect the idea with your budget, preferences, access, and any medical nutrition instructions.

Start with a meal you already eat

Write down a familiar breakfast, lunch, dinner, or snack. Choose one part you would like to examine rather than redesigning your entire diet. The worksheet asks what you enjoy, what is convenient, and what you might change. A useful plan should still look like something you would eat.

Look beyond the label

NIDDK’s general adult guidance includes vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and a range of protein foods. The book’s visual hierarchy is a separate editorial framework, not an official nutrient score. A broad category cannot tell you everything about an individual food, its portion, or its place in a meal. Read the NIDDK guidance.

Include real-life constraints

Record the time, equipment, cost, and shopping access you actually have. The worksheet includes space for allergies, prescribed restrictions, and foods that matter to you culturally or personally. Use those details when discussing changes with a dietitian. They are part of planning, not obstacles to hide.

Choose one experiment and review it

Describe a specific change and decide when you will revisit it. Your notes might concern preparation time, cost, convenience, or whether you liked the result. If it did not work, record why. The point of the worksheet is to improve the next plan, not to label the whole day a success or failure.
